It’s Time For A Family Meal

Welcome to the very first Family Meal! This series of events brings an eclectic group together to build community through conversation and a shared meal. Family Meal revives the tradition of dinner parties, popular in the 1905s, with a unique spin: each meal will take a different approach to the overall theme, attendees, event space, and menu.

The name ‘Family Meal’ is inspired by the restaurant industry tradition of family meals, where the entire staff—chefs, line cooks, servers, and management—gather to eat together before a shift begins. No matter our role, I believe we work better together and build a stronger community when we sit down and get to know each other. So, why not do that over a meal?! Thus, Family Meal.

Theme: Made in America

What does ‘making it in America’ mean? Our first Family Meal theme dives into all the intricacies of being ‘made’ by utilizing the story of Italian immigration to America. The theme is taken from the title of The Sopranos series finale, “Made in America.” When it comes to pop culture, the Mafia is synonymous with how we often initially view Italians.

From The Sopranos, Goodfellas, The Godfather, etc., being ‘made’ in mob terms acknowledges that you’re now a part of the family; you have safety and loyalty, financial security, and thus comfort from the hardships you’re attempting to overcome. But aren’t those goals what every person wants when it comes to the American Dream?

Our meal will explore all the complexities of an immigrant story in the pursuit of being ‘Made in America’ (not directly in the mob way) and how you are a product of your environment and experience.

Thus, the discussions for the meal will be centered around the American Dream and what being ‘made’ means…
